A digital corkboard that lives inside your Windows wallpaper. Sticky notes, images, drawings, and live widgets — baked right into your desktop. One keystroke (Ctrl+Alt+Q) drops anything on your clipboard straight onto the canvas.

What Is MagnaDesk?
MagnaDesk places interactive sticky notes, images, drawings, and live widgets directly into your Windows wallpaper. Items are rendered into the wallpaper bitmap itself — there's no visible overlay window in normal use. They sit below your desktop icons, behave like part of the wallpaper, and ask next to nothing of your machine when you're not editing.
When you need to add or edit items, press Ctrl+Shift+M to open Edit Mode — a transparent overlay spans all your monitors with a full editing toolbar. Make your changes, press Esc, and everything bakes back into the wallpaper.

Three Simple States
Viewing Mode
Your items are baked into the wallpaper. No overlay window, no running process drawing on your screen. Items sit below desktop icons like they're part of the wallpaper — because they are. Zero resource overhead.
Edit Mode
Press Ctrl+Shift+M or click the tray icon. A transparent overlay appears across all monitors with an editing toolbar. Add, move, resize, rotate, and delete items. Press Esc to bake everything back into the wallpaper.
Hidden
Tuck everything away with a single toggle — just your wallpaper, no canvas. Quick Paste (Ctrl+Alt+Q) still works while hidden, so you can keep capturing things even with the canvas out of sight. Toggle back when you want it all again.
Taskbar Button or Tray Icon — Your Call
MagnaDesk is meant to sit quietly in the system tray and stay out of your taskbar. The catch: Windows 11 hides new tray icons by default, and plenty of first-time users simply couldn't find the app. So you get a choice.
- Taskbar button — a normal window with Edit Desktop and Settings buttons and a menu with everything else. Closing it minimizes and MagnaDesk keeps running; quit with Exit. New installs start here.
- Tray icon — the quiet original. Left-click toggles Edit Mode, right-click opens the full menu.
- Switch anytime in Settings → General → Taskbar / Tray. One or the other, never both.
If you want the tray icon and Windows has hidden it: click the ^ chevron by your clock and drag the MagnaDesk icon out onto the taskbar. No chevron at all? Right-click the taskbar → Taskbar settings → Other system tray icons → switch MagnaDesk on. It's a one-time thing per install, and the Settings panel walks you through it.
Headline Feature
Quick Paste — Ctrl+Alt+Q
This is the fastest way to get anything off your screen and onto your desktop on Windows. From any app, press Ctrl+Alt+Q and MagnaDesk reads your clipboard and drops the contents straight onto the canvas — no Edit Mode, no toolbar, no extra clicks.
- Clipboard has an image? It's placed at a random spot on the canvas and baked into the wallpaper.
- Clipboard has text? A new sticky note is created with that text — still fully editable, never flattened into a bitmap.
- Canvas hidden? Quick Paste still works. Items keep accumulating in the background, ready for whenever you toggle the canvas back on.

Headline Feature
Quick Note Edit — Double-Tap Ctrl+Alt+Q
Same shortcut, two gestures: one tap pastes, two taps edits. Double-tap Ctrl+Alt+Q within 400 ms and a small floating note editor pops up centered on screen — no Edit Mode, no overlay across all your monitors. It's the quickest way to jot down a thought or fix a typo on a note without stopping what you're doing.
- Floating, always-on-top editor — a compact dark window showing one sticky note at a time, right where you're working.
- Cycle through every note — the ❮ / ❯ arrows step through all the notes on your canvas, and the header shows the count so you know where you are.
- Edit, resize, recolor — type straight into the note, nudge the font size with − / +, or recolor it with the five color swatches.
- + New note — drops a fresh blank note on the canvas (random spot, tilt, and color, just like Quick Paste) and jumps the editor right to it with the caret ready.
- 🗑 Delete note — removes the note you're looking at after a quick confirm (there's no undo). Delete the last one and the window simply closes.
- Esc closes it — and only the notes you actually changed trigger a wallpaper re-bake. Cycle through everything without editing and your wallpaper is left exactly as it was.
Scroll inside a long note and the wallpaper bakes the lines you were actually viewing — not always the first line at the top.

What You Can Put on Your Desktop
Sticky Notes
Editable text notes in five colors — yellow, pink, mint, blue, and white. Move, resize, and rotate them anywhere on your desktop.
Images
Place any JPG or PNG on your desktop with crop support. Or use Win+Shift+S to snip anything on screen, then Ctrl+V to paste it — web pages, spreadsheets, emails, anything visible.
Documents
Drop a PDF, Word doc, or Excel sheet onto the canvas and it sits there as a thumbnail — so the file you keep losing track of is pinned to your wallpaper instead of buried in a folder.
Drawing & Shapes
Draw directly on any item or widget on your desktop with the pen tool — no dedicated canvas required. Five colors, adjustable stroke width (1–12px), and scroll-wheel zoom to write large and shrink the result. Works with a Surface Pen or any stylus, so you can write in your own handwriting. Eraser tool removes individual strokes. Plus six shape tools for when freehand isn't precise enough.
Select a note, image, or drawing and spin the mouse wheel to scale it — it grows and shrinks from the center at 10% a notch, no handle-grabbing required, and the whole gesture undoes in one step. Widgets respond to the wheel too, in their own way — see Live Widgets below.
Shape Tools
Beyond freehand ink, the pen tool also draws clean shapes — and every shape is stored as an ordinary stroke, so it bakes into the wallpaper and undoes just like anything else you draw.
- Six shapes — Line, Arrow (with barbed tip), Circle, Rectangle, Triangle, and a 5-point Star, each drawn with a single drag.
- Shift+drag to snap a line — hold Shift while drawing freehand and the stroke becomes a clean straight line between where you started and stopped.
- Right-click for the tool menu — right-click any item while the pen is active to switch between Freehand and any shape, clear all strokes, or finish up. The current tool is checkmarked.
- Rotate while you place — sizing a Rectangle or Triangle, hold Shift or Spacebar to lock the size and rotate it around the pick point, then release to keep sizing.
- Clean undo — Ctrl+Z removes a whole arrow (shaft and both barbs) in one step, and even "Clear All Strokes" can be undone.
Live Widgets
Widgets display live data — from your Microsoft account and from the world around you — rendered right into your wallpaper. Connect multiple accounts and each account-based widget can pull from a specific account or aggregate across all of them.
Google account widgets are temporarily switched off while Google finishes reviewing the permissions MagnaDesk asks for. Google Calendar and Tasks will switch on automatically in an update — no reinstall needed.
Task List
Display tasks from a single Microsoft To Do list (Google Tasks coming soon). Checkboxes, due dates, and completion status — all visible at a glance on your desktop.
To-Do List
Aggregates tasks across all your lists, grouped by due date — Overdue, Today, Tomorrow, Upcoming, and No Date. Like the To Do app's smart view, but on your wallpaper.
Calendar
Upcoming events grouped by day with subject, time, and location. Shows 7 days ahead by default. Works with Outlook (Google Calendar coming soon).
OneNote
Your most recently modified OneNote pages with notebook, section, and relative timestamps. Quick visual of what you've been working on.
Unread messages from your inbox with sender, subject, and preview. Red indicator for high-importance messages. Shows "Inbox zero" when you're caught up.
Radar
Live weather radar baked into your wallpaper — no account needed. Search any city to drop the view where you live. True radar covers the UK & Europe (EUMETNET OPERA), North America, and a good many other regions, with a global model layer filling in everywhere else. Four zoom levels (Wide ~500 km, Regional ~250 km, Local ~125 km, Town ~60 km) pull tighter areas at full source resolution, so closer weather shows real detail instead of bigger pixels. Pan the view north/south/east/west to center on your town, or hit ⌖ to recenter. Zoomed views sit over an Esri World Street Map basemap so storms line up with real towns and coastlines. Free for 30 days, then part of the full version.
Weather
A worldwide forecast on your wallpaper — no account, no API key. Search any city and the widget pulls current conditions and the days ahead from Open-Meteo. It shares the same city search as the Radar widget, so picking your location once is enough. Set whether new Weather widgets start in °C or °F in Settings → General → Units.
Local To-Do
A plain checklist that lives on your desktop and nowhere else. No account, no sign-in, no sync — just a list you tick off, stored on your own computer.
Widget Features
- Connect multiple Microsoft accounts simultaneously — a full-version feature; the free version runs one account (Google accounts coming soon)
- Each widget can show data from one account or all accounts combined
- 11 background color themes — Dark, Slate, Navy, Cobalt, Teal, Forest, Olive, Rust, Wine, Plum, Charcoal (full version)
- Scroll wheel resizes a widget — scaling reveals more or fewer items; hold Shift while scrolling to scale the text too
- Auto-refresh on a configurable interval, plus manual refresh — all widgets refresh at once, so a screen full of them updates in about the time the slowest one takes
- Offline? Widgets keep showing your last synced data instead of going blank, and mark the status line (⚠ Updated 9:24 AM) so you know you're looking at something stale
- Hide the canvas and widget refresh pauses to save CPU and network — everything fast-forwards when you bring it back, so nothing looks frozen in time

Built-In Wallpaper Engine
MagnaDesk doesn't just draw on your wallpaper — it manages it too.
To render the canvas the way I wanted — baked right into the desktop, below the icons, with no overlay window in the way — I had to take over the wallpaper itself. Once I was already managing your wallpaper, it felt wrong to do it halfway. So I'm building it out into a proper wallpaper engine: single images, slideshows, solid colors, independent control of every monitor, and more to come. If MagnaDesk is going to own your wallpaper, I want it to be the best wallpaper experience on your machine.
Single Image
Set any image file as your wallpaper with your choice of fit — Stretch, Fill, Fit (letterbox), Center, or Tile.
Slideshow
Cycle through images in a folder at a configurable interval. Sequential or shuffle, and it can pull from subfolders too. Advance anytime with Ctrl+Alt+W or from the right-click desktop menu. On a laptop or tablet, you can tell it to pause while you're on battery.
Solid Color
Pick a preset color or enter a hex value for a clean, minimal background.
Every Monitor, Separately
Tick Control each monitor separately and every display gets its own mode, image, color, or slideshow folder — one screen on a solid color while another runs a slideshow. Monitors advance one at a time rather than all flipping at once, so your desktop changes gradually instead of blinking. Independent folders per monitor are a full-version feature; wallpaper baking and slideshows across all your monitors are not.
Finding Wallpapers
The Sources panel points you straight to Unsplash, Pexels, and Wallhaven. Browse and download there, save to a folder, then aim the slideshow at it. MagnaDesk used to search those sites for you — their terms don't allow apps like mine to do that, so now it sends you to them directly and they get the visit.
Boards — More Than One Desktop
A board is a whole independent canvas: its own notes, images, drawings, widgets, and pen color. Keep one for work, one for home, one for the project that's eating your life — and switch between them from the tray in a click.
- Switch instantly — pick a board from the Boards submenu. The one you're leaving is saved first, then the new one loads and bakes into your wallpaper.
- Create, rename, delete — all from the same menu. Deleting asks first, and you can't delete your only board.
- Nothing to migrate — the desktop you already have becomes a board called My Desktop the first time you run this version. You won't lose anything or have to set it up.
- Backed up like everything else — each board gets its own folder with the same automatic backups as the main canvas.
Creating extra boards is a full-version feature. Switching between, viewing, renaming, and deleting the boards you already have always works — no board is ever hidden or taken away from you.
Find Anything on Your Canvas
Once you've got a busy desktop, things get lost — buried under other items, stranded off-screen after a monitor change, or faded to 15% opacity by someone who then couldn't find them again. (That someone was me.) The Items tab in Settings lists everything on your canvas and lets you fix it from there.
- Everything, grouped by type — Notes, Images, Documents, Drawings, and Widgets, listed even when the canvas is hidden.
- Click a row to find it — MagnaDesk drops into Edit Mode if it needs to, brings the item to the front, and highlights it on the canvas.
- Search and sort — filter by name or type, and sort by z-order, name, or opacity.
- Names that make sense — sticky notes name themselves from their first few words, or type your own. Clear the field to go back to the automatic one.
- Opacity slider per item — fade or restore anything live, with a one-click reset back to 100%.
- Bring to front, send to back, delete — sort out z-order and clear clutter without hunting for the thing on screen.
Editing Tools
The editing toolbar floats at the bottom of your screen. Drag it anywhere with the grip handle.
- Select (S) — click to select items. Drag to move. Corner handles to resize, rotation handle to rotate, × to delete
- Add Note (N) — creates a new sticky note at the center of your primary monitor
- Add Image (I) — opens a file picker to place an image on the canvas
- Paste (Ctrl+V) — pastes a clipboard image. Use Win+Shift+S to capture anything on screen first
- Pen (P) — freehand drawing directly on any item, with adjustable stroke width and scroll-wheel zoom, plus six shape tools (Line, Arrow, Circle, Rectangle, Triangle, Star) from the right-click menu
- Eraser (E) — click a stroke to erase it
- Undo (Ctrl+Z) — reverses the last action
- Done (Esc) — exits Edit Mode and bakes everything into the wallpaper
Multi-Monitor Support
The MagnaDesk canvas spans all connected monitors. Place items on any screen and they'll be baked into the correct position in the wallpaper.
- Items on disconnected monitors automatically migrate to the nearest active monitor
- When the monitor reconnects, items return to their original positions
- Mixed display scaling is handled properly, so baked items match what you saw in Edit Mode on every screen
- Use "Recover Off-Screen Items" from the tray menu if anything gets lost
- Your original wallpaper comes back whenever you exit — and it comes back even if MagnaDesk crashes
Keyboard Shortcuts
The three shortcuts that work from anywhere — Toggle Edit Mode, Next Wallpaper, and Quick Paste — are defaults, not fixed. Remap them in Settings → General → Hotkeys: click one, press your combination (needs at least one modifier), and if it clashes with another MagnaDesk shortcut or something another app has already claimed, it tells you right there instead of quietly failing. Reset puts a default back. The rest apply inside Edit Mode.

Account Integration
Microsoft
Sign in using the device code flow — you'll get a code to enter at microsoft.com/devicelogin. Grants access to To Do, Calendar, OneNote, and Mail. Works with both personal and work/school accounts.
Google — coming soon
Sign in via browser-based OAuth for Google Calendar and Tasks. It's built and waiting — switched off while Google reviews the permissions MagnaDesk asks for, with the Add Google… button greyed out until then. Once it clears, everything switches on in an update with no reinstall.
All tokens are encrypted via Windows DPAPI and stored locally. Nothing leaves your machine.
The free version connects one account — Microsoft today, or Google once it's switched on. Connecting several at once is part of the full version.
